If your water heater has started popping, rumbling or crackling, the culprit is almost certainly sediment, and in Wichita Falls it builds up faster than almost anywhere. The noise is not an emergency, but it is telling you the heater is working against a problem that shortens its life and pushes up your bill.
What the noise actually is
The minerals in hard water do not stay dissolved once you heat them. They come out of solution and settle as a layer of scale and grit on the bottom of the tank, right where the burner heats a gas unit or above the lower element on an electric one.
Water gets trapped underneath that sediment layer. When the heater fires, that trapped water boils and forces its way up through the sediment, and the sound of it escaping is the popping and rumbling you hear. A heavier, more constant rumble usually means a thick, established layer. Occasional crackling is often a lighter, newer buildup.
What it is costing you
A sediment layer does two expensive things. It insulates the water from the burner, so the heater has to run longer and hotter to heat the same water, which shows up on your energy bill. And it makes the steel at the bottom of the tank overheat, because the burner is now heating metal instead of water, which brings the tank to the end of its life sooner.
So the noise is not just an annoyance. It is the sound of a unit ageing faster than it should and running less efficiently while it does.
What you can do about it
The direct fix is to flush the tank, which drains the water and, ideally, carries the loose sediment out with it. On a fairly young heater that has been flushed before, this is a reasonable homeowner job and it can quieten the unit noticeably.
There is a real catch on older units, though. A heater that has never been flushed often has a plastic drain valve that is seized solid, and the sediment itself can block the valve half open and leave you unable to stop the flow once you start. If your heater is over eight years old and has never been flushed, the first flush is genuinely worth handing to a plumber who can deal with it if the valve fails. Proper water heater service also checks the anode rod and the elements while the tank is open, which a DIY flush does not.
Stopping it coming back
Flushing removes today's sediment. It does not change the water, so the buildup starts again immediately. The two things that actually slow it down are an annual flush to keep the layer thin, and treating the water before it reaches the heater.
A water softener is the real answer in a supply this hard. It removes the minerals that form the scale, which protects not just the heater but your fixtures, your dishwasher and your washing machine at the same time. Fitting one alongside a new water heater, rather than after the old one has failed early, is the sensible sequence here.
When to stop flushing and replace
A flush buys time on a sound tank. It does not undo damage that is already done. These signs mean the sediment has won and replacement is the better spend:
- The unit is over ten years old and rumbling heavily, especially past twelve years, which is already beyond the local average.
- There is rust in the hot water, or rusty water on first draw from several taps, which points at the tank corroding from the inside.
- The tank is weeping from its body rather than a fitting. Nothing repairs a corroded tank, and it holds forty gallons or more.
