How to Hire a Plumber in Wichita Falls

Most plumbing complaints in Texas are not about the repair. They are about a price that changed, a licence nobody checked, and a permit nobody pulled. Here is how to avoid all three.

Before You Agree to Anything

Six Checks, Five Minutes

None of this requires knowing anything about plumbing. It is all about the paperwork and the process, which is where things actually go wrong.

Check Good answer Walk away if
Texas licence An RMP or M number given without hesitation, verifiable with the state board They will not give one, or say their boss holds it and cannot tell you whose
The quote Written, itemised, given before work starts, with after hours rates stated Verbal only, or a number that changes once the wall is open
Insurance Liability cover, with a certificate available on request Defensiveness, or being told it is not needed for small jobs
Permits They pull City of Wichita Falls permits for gas, sewer, heater and repipe work They offer to skip the permit to save you money
Diagnosis Camera or leak detection used before quoting any dig or replacement Major replacement recommended after a two minute look
Payment and warranty Deposit on large jobs only, balance on completion, written warranty on parts and labour Full amount in cash up front, or a warranty that covers parts but not the labour to fit them

The Single Most Important One

Verifying the Licence Takes About a Minute

Texas regulates plumbing work, and the licence is the one thing you can check independently rather than taking on trust. It is free, it is public, and almost nobody does it.

  • Ask for the number. A Responsible Master Plumber licence is an RMP number, and individual plumbers hold M numbers. Either is fine to start with.
  • Check it with the state board. The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners maintains a public register. Search the number or the name.
  • Check it is current. A licence that has lapsed is not a licence. The register shows status, not just existence.
  • Watch the reaction. Any legitimate plumber gives you the number without a second thought, because they are asked regularly. Hesitation or irritation is itself the answer.
  • Do it before work starts. Afterwards it is just information. Beforehand it is a decision.

Texas also requires plumbing advertising to display the licence number, so a company that advertises without one is telling you something before you even call.

Regulator

Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners

P.O. Box 4200, Austin, TX 78765
(800) 845-6584

The board maintains the public licence register and handles complaints about licensed plumbers. Worth knowing before you need it.

City of Wichita Falls

Permits for water heater replacement, gas line work, sewer replacement and repiping go through the city inside its limits.

Outside city limits

County or a TCEQ regional office, particularly for septic. Different route, different timeline.

Comparing Quotes

Why the Cheapest Number Is Often Not the Cheapest Job

On a large job the headline figure tells you very little. What matters is what each quote actually includes, and that is where they differ most.

Drywall and paint after a repipe

The most common exclusion, and the most expensive surprise. Access holes have to be patched, textured and painted. Ask explicitly whether that is in the price or yours to arrange.

Permit fees

Sometimes included, sometimes added later. Either is fine, but they should be stated rather than discovered.

Removal of the old unit

On a water heater replacement, hauling the old tank away is real work. A quote that leaves it in your garage is not comparable to one that does not.

What happens if they find more

Ask what the process is if they open a wall and find something worse. A quote with a clear change process beats one with a vague low number.

Materials specified

PEX versus copper on a repipe is a real difference in both cost and outcome. Two quotes for "a repipe" may not be for the same job at all.

Warranty length and scope

A year on parts and labour is worth considerably more than thirty days on labour only. That difference alone can justify a higher quote.

Questions

Hiring Questions

How do I check a Texas plumbing licence?

Ask for the RMP or M number, then verify it against the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners public register. It is free, it takes about a minute, and it confirms both that the licence exists and that it is currently valid, which are not the same thing. Any legitimate plumber will give you the number without hesitating, because they are asked regularly. If someone is reluctant or irritated by the question, that reaction is itself useful information.

What plumbing work needs a permit in Wichita Falls?

Water heater replacement, gas line installation or extension, sewer line replacement and whole home repiping generally require a City of Wichita Falls permit and inspection. Most straightforward repairs do not. The licensed plumber pulls the permit rather than you. The important thing is that a contractor offering to skip it to save you money is offering to leave you with unpermitted work, which surfaces during inspection when you sell and can affect an insurance claim in the meantime.

Should I get more than one quote?

For a large job like a repipe, a sewer replacement or a slab leak, yes, and compare what is actually included rather than the headline number. For a genuine emergency with water coming through a ceiling it is rarely practical, and that is precisely why knowing what to ask on the phone matters so much in those situations. Even at midnight you can ask the licence number, the after hours rate and whether you will get the price in writing before work starts.

Is the cheapest quote usually the right one?

Not reliably, and on large jobs it often is not. A quote well below the others usually excludes something the rest include: drywall repair and painting after a repipe, permit fees, hauling away the old water heater, or a materially shorter warranty. Sometimes it is a different specification entirely, such as a cheaper pipe material. Compare scope first and price second, and if one quote is dramatically lower, ask specifically what it does not cover.

What are the clearest warning signs?

Four stand out. Refusing to provide a licence number, or being evasive about it. Offering to skip the permit to save you money, which tells you how they operate generally. Demanding the full amount in cash up front before starting. And recommending a major replacement, particularly anything involving digging, without any camera footage or leak detection to support it. Any one of those is enough reason to get a second opinion, and there is no urgency that makes them acceptable.

What if I am unhappy with work that has been done?

Start with the plumber directly and in writing, describing the problem and what you want done about it. Most reputable companies would rather fix an issue than have a dispute. If that goes nowhere and the work was done by a licensed plumber, the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners handles complaints about licence holders. This is also one of several reasons why written quotes, written warranties and a documented diagnosis matter: they are what you have to point at afterwards.
